Buses on all three Cambridge routes start rolling at 6:35 a.m., then from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., operate on call-in service status, meaning riders need to call dispatch 24 hours in advance for a pickup on those routes during the five midday hours. This change was made to use DCT’s resources in the most efficient manner.
Regular service on all three begins again at 3:35 p.m., and continues until after 6 p.m. At that point, demand response is in effect again from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The evening demand response is an increase over the previous schedule, providing two more hours of service in the evening, Monday through Friday in Cambridge.
Another change is in service to Salisbury. “We added an 11:30 a.m. run,” DCT Transportation Operations Manager Jerome Stanley said, adding that this move should spread the trips more evenly through the day, leading to greater convenience for riders. The Cambridge Central route now starts two hours later on Saturdays. Overall, while there are no drastic adjustments, riders should keep an eye on pickup times, some of which, such as on the Easton run in the mornings, have changed by a few minutes.
DCT operates a fleet of more than 70 buses, which serve Dorchester, Talbot, Caroline and Kent counties directly, with connections to the rest of the Eastern Shore. About 200,000 rides were provided just in Dorchester last year. DCT was named by the Community Transportation Association of America as the best rural transportation system in the nation in 2007.
