What is Eastern Shore Respite?
The Eastern Shore Respite Care Project provides "a gift of
caring" by providing family-to-family relief care to individuals
who are developmentally or functionally disabiled, living in one
of the nine counties on the Eastern Shore.
This service is for the families who need short-term relief or
"breaks" from constant and often stressful care they provide
for their baby, child, or adult with a disability.
Benefits
Respite is well-deserved time off. It can range from a few hours
to two weeks, and may occur in the family's home, a friend or neighbor's
home, or a certified respite sitting. It can be set-up on a planned
basis or as an emergency need. It goes far beyond babysitting, to
include special attention to an individual's needs. It begins and
ends with the coordinated efforts of many people - family members,
Resource Coordinators, Respite Coordinators, Social Service Agencies,
and Emergency Services.
Respite Care is a necessary and vital service which supports families
trying to keep their child or adult with them in the community.
It helps prevent unnecessary or premature institutionalization of
an individual with a functional or developmental disability.
Once approval for respite services occurs, financial reimbursement
based on a sliding fee scale, is made to the family.
